Shikamaru sat at his kitchen table, picking at the piece of cake in front of him. It was the 5th anniversary of Kakashi leaving and even Sakura's cakes couldn't help. He sighed, pushing the plate away. "How troublesome...," he muttered. "What's wrong, Shikamaru-kun?," asked Temari, his wife. He smiled.
"Oh, it's nothing, Temari-sama," he said with a winning smile. "Then give the cake to Kari," she said slyly, watching him push the cake onto his daughter's plate. Right after Kakashi had left, Shikamaru had proposed marriage to her, and she had always felt he still love the lazy Jounin. Up until Kari's fifth birthday, he always seemed very distant, but now he was always very cheerful and different. Temari smile quietly, sitting down and putting an arm around her husband, kissing him on the cheek.
He grinned and turned his head as she did so, kissing back. She smiled. Yup, he's fine alright, she thought, reaching over and scratching her daughter's curly brown head, smiling as the child turned her messy, cake-covered face torwards her mother. Shikamaru smiled, kissing Kari on the cheek. The doorbell was heard. "I'll get it," Shikamaru said cheerfully, getting up and hurrying to answer the door. He put a hand on the doorknob, opening the door, and gasped.
"K-K-Kakashi?!," he stuttered, stepping back. The 21-year-old man was surprised to see the man he had once loved but who dissapeared standing there, same as when he had left. Kakashi looked him straight in the eyes. "Hello...Shikamaru," he said slowly, "May I come in?" Shikamaru nodded, too surprised to say anything, stepping aside to let Kakashi in. "Who is it, Shikamaru?," Temari called, walking into the hall, trying to wrestle Kari's rattle out of her hands. She looked up slowly, then her eyes widened. "Y-You?," she asked, taking a step back.
Kari blinked, looking around her, then looking at her father, reaching out her hands. Shikamaru sighed and took the child from Temari's arms. "Hello, Temari-san. And who's this?," he asked, smiling at them, completely unfased, but still realizing, by the fact Temari and Shikamaru were married. "This is my daughter, Kari," Shikamaru replied quietly.
