Mom.
The word he wanted to say, to be able to call someone that. Instead, all he got were stares laced with hate.
He already had a father - or, at least, a fatherly figure. But it felt like it wasn't enough, no matter how selfish. Iruka-sensei was always there for him, he knew that, but there were some things he couldn't give him.
He wanted to be able to run to someone, someone who would pick him up and hug him or greet him with a smile on their face. He wanted someone to comfort him when he had a bad dream. He wanted to be able to run to her when he got hurt. He wanted to be able to cry into someone's shoulder. He wanted a Mom.
Every time Mother's Day came around, he'd watch with envy as the other kids laughed and talked about what they would make for their mother. The whole class would turn into a flurry of cutting and gluing as they hurried to finish their cards, gifts, or whatever it happened to be.
Except Naruto.
He was slumped over his desk, staring over his arms at the kids who were grouped together and chatting endlessly. He was just about to get up and go ask Iruka-sensei if he could go to the bathroom, when he caught sight of another boy, all alone, sort of like himself. But unlike himself, this boy was working hard on a card.
The card wasn't much, just a few crude hearts and stick figures on a folded piece of pink construction paper. But the big thing that caught Naruto's eyes were the words written across the top.
"Happy Mother's Day, Dad."
'Why "Dad?"' Naruto wondered. 'It was Mother's Day, was it not?' He stood up and walked over to the kid.
"It's Mother's Day," Naruto said simply, pointing at the card.
Confusion was in the boy's eyes as he stared at Naruto, but after following Naruto's finger, he seemed to understand.
"I don't have a Mommy, so my Daddy takes care of me instead," he explained, as if that was the most sensible thing in the world.
That gave Naruto a great idea. He hurried over to grab a piece of construction paper and began working.
At the end of class, he was unusually smiley as he walked out, although he carried nothing in his hands.
"Happy Mother's Day, Iruka-sensei."
