Chapter 2-Ready or Not

“Stupid Ino and all her dumb Ino-ness” said the quirky Mai as she beat a pillow with the clear word “INO” woven upon it. “Why does this dumb Ino pillow have to be so soft” said Mai hugging it.

For some reason she always looked frantically upon arriving in the kitchen.

It certainly wasn’t the utter paranoia of people disturbed.

Possibly a yearning for her parents both deceased.

“I’m so sick of toast” grumbled Mai, stuffing the crusty thing into her mouth. Her hand firmly on the door knob, all the fear started to flow back like an unchecked flood gate.

“No, I’m not going to end up like the rest of my clan, I hate them, they say that by avoiding contact with others you can stay safe, but look at them now, they’re all dead! I’m glad! To hell with my clan!” Letting out a deep pocket of warm air, Mai stepped outside.

A janitor with a push broom was at work, using every ounce of willpower not to eye the poor girl with the disturbing monologue. She knew it was just venting, the vehement anger targeted at her clan was for her, a valiant struggle for change, to quench her parents’ desire.

She turned a corner, looking around the tree; this was where the team agreed to regroup.

Instead of a scolding by the Golden Princess she was greeted by a knocking of wood, an ode to effort.

There was a boy that looked a little older than her, pounding a log perpetually.

His kicks were steady and strong with every blow being more powerful than the last. Abruptly with a mighty crack, the entire wood post was knocked into the forest. Mai covered her mouth from behind the tree, silencing her squeak.

He smiled and began turning away but stopped mid-turn “I know you are there” he called out, voice steady as his kicks.

Mai began slinking out from behind the colossal tree but halted when she realized he had another female visitor.

“You got me Lee, you know I like watching you work out, its just so.. hot” her posture was excellent, yet her movements were a bit over exaggerated like she was dancing.

Lee shook his head and shoved her lightly to the side, accidentally knocking her over onto the wet grass “Your senses are dulling Tenten, you come out as well little mouse”

Mai tiptoed out of hiding slowly, feelings of apprehension rose beyond the boiling point “U-um it’s Mai actually” she almost had a heart attack when his hand shot out.

“Rock Lee of the leaf village, what’s a girl like you doing out here?”

She tried hard to get the words out, she really did but a few got stuck in her throat, so her voice cracked as such “Th-This is forest section A isn’t it?”

His finger lifted, aimed in a particular direction like a compass, by instinct Mai’s eyes followed, the scene she witnessed highlighted her juvenile mistake.

She turned to say thank you but he was gone with one arm hanging like a wreath around the hazel-eyed girl in the white taijutsu top.

The closer she got to the team the more intensely she cringed.

Mai welcomed the scolding from Ino however, it was almost reassuring. Ino was disarmed by Mai's smiling face.

“You will all enter the Chuunin exams” commanded their squad leader. Mai was no longer smiling.

Silence.

They were too preoccupied being in utter disbelief.

"I don’t even know your name!” screamed Ino at the top of her lungs.

“Aren’t we supposed to pass some tests first!?” argued Shikamaru almost simultaneous to Ino.

“Yeah” added Mai.

He turned around, his heavy footsteps demanding attention “The name is Orin Zayka, and don’t count yourselves out yet”

After his final statement he disappeared in a flurry of puffy white smoke, application forms left in his wake.
Chapter end notes: Feeling pretty good, think I might make this a full story.
