Silence always follows a disaster, marking the path of a life that'll never be the same again. Sasuke had always hated silence. It reminded him of so many times where he simply stood in his dark room, not making a sound. The dark wasn't what bothered him, but it had solidified the fact that nothing around him meant anything. He couldn't see the grass under his feet or the trees a few feet away, there was no breeze through his hair or the feeling of someone reaching out to him. Alone, he dared himself to move so many times that he lost count, but just when he was about to, he hesitated.
He couldn't do it. He waited, petrified of moving. It engulfed him, suffocated him, and at the same time he didn't want to break it. He didn't want to be the one to start that new life where everything would be different. So instead of starting it, he waited.
He remembered all the times that he stood alone in his room, waiting for hours on end until someone came and knocked on his door, finally stopping the silence for him. He would be able to open his eyes and see the room around him, see the people smiling at him as he started the new life. The relief had washed over him every time, but he had never tried to break the silence or lift the darkness himself. What if he tried to, and nothing happened? What if he remained in this darkness, this nothingness, forever suffocating and unable to scream or call out for help?
He never wanted to be afraid to move; the shuffling of his clothes or his feet against the floor would be enough to shatter the quiet. Always hating the silence with a burning passion, but too terrified of breaking it; too scared of trying to start anew.
As soon as there was a noise, it would start his new life. A new life without his parents, without his brother; without anybody who would have made breaking the silence worth it. Without them, it wasn't anymore. There was no reason to move when the silence made it hard to breathe. There was no reason to step forward if there would be no one to catch him if his world came tumbling down again. He stood where not even the sound of the breeze could be heard. There were no birds, no animals; nothing that could break the suffocating silence for him.
He couldn't do it himself.
So he waited.
