It was a bright sunny day, appropriate for the joyous celebration that would soon take place. Three days ago, Tsunade-sama had received a carrier pigeon with a message Naruto. He had finally succeeded in his mission to bring back Sasuke. The two had come to an agreement and would be arriving today. Naruto would be welcomed back as a hero, with a lavish party at Tsunade’s house. All the villagers were already there, dressed up for the occasion. Hinata, wearing her finest blue dress, was hanging up the welcome banner along with her fiancée Shino, who had rented an expensive tuxedo for the party. Kakashi, similarly attired, was in a corner, reading Icha Icha Paradise as usual, and Chouji was already helping himself to the snacks. Gaara, Temari, and Kankurou had even been invited from Sunagakure. Shikamaru was, unsurprisingly, sleeping on the couch. Everyone seemed as happy as they could possibly be.
Well…almost everyone. Temari noticed Tenten sulking by herself. She sat down and put an arm around her shoulder. “Are you feeling okay, Tenten?” Tenten looked at her longtime friend from Suna.
“I’m fine. It’s just so hard to believe that he’s really dead.”
“I can only imagine how it must feel to lose a loved one. I’m sure Neji wouldn’t want you to be sad though. You should try to enjoy the festivities at least a little.” Tenten turned to Temari.
“I don’t know if you’ve heard yet, Temari… I’m carrying his child.” She placed a hand on her stomach. “I hope the child will be alright, growing up without a father.” Temari gave Tenten a reassuring pat on the back, then looked at her watch.
“Naruto will be here in about an hour. I’ll be over by the punch bowl if you need me.” And with that, the blonde kunoichi from Suna went over to the punch bowl and started chatting with her younger brothers.
Upstairs, Tsunade and Sakura were having a conversation.
“Sakura, I need to ask you something.” Tsunade’s apprentice dutifully listened. “When Sasuke returns with Naruto, he’s going to be under a lot of stress. I need you to help him feel comfortable. If he doesn’t feel comfortable, I’m afraid he might just leave again.”
“I’ll do my best.” replied Sakura, and the pink-haired medical-nin went downstairs to wait for Naruto and Sasuke.
